FREE CROCHET PATTERN

Mushroom Ornament

MATERIALS:

  • Hook – G [4.0 mm]
  • Yarn – Red (A yarn) / Ecru (B yarn) [or colors of your choosing] worsted weight yarn
  • Polyester Fiberfill
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker [optional]

GAUGE:

  • Not important with this project.
  • Ornament works up to approximately 3″ tall

STITCH ABBREVIATIONS:

  • SC – Single crochet
  • Dec – Decrease [*Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop* twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook]
  • Sts – Stitches

NOTES:

  • Rounds are worked in continuous spirals; do not join. Do not turn work at the end of each round.
  • For best results, be sure to crochet your stitches tightly.
INSTRUCTIONS:

Cap of mushroom

R1 – With A yarn SC 6 in magic circle
R2 – *2 SC in each st* 6 times [12 sts]
R3 – *2 SC in next st, SC in next st* 6 times [18 sts]
R4 – *2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts* 6 times [24 sts]
R5 – *2 SC in next st, SC in next 3 sts* 6 times [30 sts]
R6 – *2 SC in next st, SC in next 4 sts* 6 times [36 sts]
R7-R9 – SC around [36 sts]
R10 – SC around in back loops [36 sts]
R11 – Change to B yarn *Dec 1, SC 4* 6 times [30 sts]
R12 – *Dec 1, SC 3* 6 times [24 sts]
R13 – *Dec 1, SC 2* 6 times [18 sts]
Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing

Stem of mushroom

R1 – With B yarn SC 6 in magic circle
R2 – *2 SC in each st* 6 times [12 sts]
R3 – *2 SC in next st, SC in next st* 6 times [18 sts]
R4 – SC around in back loops [18 sts]
R5 – SC around [18 sts]
R6 – *Dec 1, SC 4* 3 times [15 sts]
R7-R9 – SC round [15 sts]
R10 – *Dec 1, SC 3* 3 times [12 sts]
R11 – SC around [12 sts]
R12 – *2 SC in next st, SC in next st* 6 times [18 sts]
Finish off, weave in tail

Stuff cap and stem with polyester fiberfill, then whip-stitch both pieces together.  I like to use the extra yarn from the tail of cap to attach to the top of mushroom to make the ornament “hanger”.

Sew handles to opposite ends of cauldron.  Weave in all ends.
